Kinds and Features of IC Cards

There are contactless IC cards, such as FeliCa, HID, TypeA and TypeB.

Felica is the technology of contactless IC card developed by Sony, and it has more than 90% of share for contactless IC card in the Japanese market.

FeliCa has some formats such as SSFC and FCF, and it is widely employed for public transport system such as Suica/ICOCA, or electronic money, Edy, or employee ID card.

Mifare, which is based on ISO 14443 TypeA, is the technology of contactless IC card developed by Philips (now NXP Semiconductors).

It is best widespread all over the globe, mainly in Europe and North America.

In ISO 14443, the system of contactless IC card of contactless communication using the wireless 13.56MHz is defined.

The system is further divided into two types ― TypeA and TypeB ― and Mifare is an IC card based on TypeA.

*Although FeliCa, which has been explained earlier, was aiming to be standardized as Type C in ISO 14443, but eventually failed to become the standard.

LEGIC is a standard of IC card for electronic keys developed by a key maker, Legic, and it is used centrally in Europe.

LEGIC is superior in security, less expensive with the feature of simple system making it suitable for the administration of entering and leaving; it is used by many companies for their employee ID card.

There are some kinds, such as LEGIC Advant 1024, 2048, and LEGIC Prime, and Legic Advant2048 is a card based on TypeA.

TypeB is a system developed by Motoro US.

Different from TypeA, a CPU has to be boarded on the card, but suitable for high speed communication.

Due to the equipment of a CPU, the cost is higher, but TypeB is used where the demand for multifunction and high security may be high.

In Japan, TypeB is employed for many public cards such as a driver’s license, government official, e-passport.

HID Prox and HID iCLASS are IC cards developed by HID Global.

They are widespread worldwide, mainly in the US and Oceania, and are used in the field of the administration system for entering and leaving.

There are two types of iCLASS: a card with simple function and low security, and with multifunction and high security.

Furthermore, there are two types of iCLASS cards: a 2K bit card based on ISO15693, and a 16Ks bit card based on TypeB and ISO15693.
